Generative AI video: a professional workflow

Generating a clip is easy. Building a coherent, editable video that sustains an idea still calls for cinematic language, method and many human decisions.

01

Direction before generation

Shots and movements work when they serve a narrative choice.

02

Designed continuity

References and coverage need to be built with the final sequence in mind.

03

AI within a pipeline

Filming, generation, editing, VFX and sound become one controlled process.

A prompt cannot replace direction

A good prompt can describe subject, lighting, lens, movement and atmosphere. A film is a sequence of choices: where does the viewer look? What changes between shots? What information should be held back?

That is why I treat the prompt as a production brief. It translates a visual decision already made, rather than relying on the model to stumble upon an idea for us.

From reference to continuity

The real challenge is keeping identity, space, light and movement direction consistent across clips. References help, but they must be designed: complementary character views, consistent costume details, clear relationships to the environment and coherent camera language.

When a model invents the hidden side of a face or changes a proportion, simply regenerating is not enough. We need to identify the missing information and build a reference that reduces ambiguity.

  • Define characters, environments and palettes before generating clips.
  • Plan shots, reverse shots and eyelines.
  • Generate alternatives with the edit already in mind.

Editing is where material becomes a story

Generations vary in length, rhythm and small errors. In post-production, I select useful fragments, reshape timing and work on continuity, masks, VFX, speed and colour correction. The aim is to keep the limits of AI from interrupting the story.

Sound is equally decisive. Ambience, effects, voice and music can connect images generated separately. Sound design often makes a sequence feel like a single space.

Hybrid production: choose the medium scene by scene

Not everything needs to be generated. A real shot can bring presence, precision or credibility; AI can expand an environment, visualise what could not be filmed or speed up concept development. The best result comes from using each medium where it works best.

Professional skill therefore means designing a reliable system across filming, generation and post-production, beyond knowing the latest model.
